On the one hand, this means “The Betrayers” couldn’t be more timely, but on the other, timeliness is not what fiction does. In the real world, of course, Israel exploded in conflict in recent months, as did the Ukraine. What does the novelist do in the face of history? Such a question, notes David Bezmozgis in his essay “The Novel in Real Time,” once made Philip Roth worry about contemporary fiction, which he feared might be overwhelmed by “our absurd and almost unaccountable reality.”īezmozgis’ new novel “The Betrayers” is a case in point: the story of an Israeli politician who, on the losing side in a dispute over settlements, flees Tel Aviv with his young girlfriend for Yalta, in the Ukraine, where as a boy he spent a glorious summer with his parents.

"Fast" Eddie Felson has slowed down quite a bit. Tevis wouldn't live to see Scorsese's adaptation, however, dying of lung cancer a mere eight days after his final book went on sale. Like The Hustler, Color arrived in theaters two years after its source text, a novel by Walter Tevis, was published. His performance as "Fast" Eddie Felson was one of that film's nine targets of Academy recognition, with wins coming for cinematography and art direction in the diluted black and white divisions. It follows the black and white 1961 drama The Hustler, which earned Newman his second Best Actor Oscar nomination. The Color of Money is a sequel and remains one of the least timely in film history. Behind the camera stood veteran director Martin Scorsese, 43, whose career was on a bit of a downtick following his string of acclaimed works including Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. Cruise had just a few years of credits under his belt and only one big hit ( Risky Business), but that was about to change when Top Gun would become the year's #1 attraction and cement his star status. Top billing went to 61-year-old Paul Newman, a 7-time Academy Award-nominated living legend aging gracefully and remaining a box office draw with his pick of Hollywood's litter.īy his side was 23-year-old Tom Cruise, his surname already commanding the same size and weight on the poster. In 1986, three titans of film from three different generations came together to make the Touchstone Pictures drama The Color of Money. People keep asking when the movie will be released, and I wish I had an answer other than soon. But sometimes, it seems the closer we come to an actual release date, the more other forces interfere. Every step forward makes us that much more eager to see the film in theaters across the country. Just a few weeks ago, I viewed early editions of two trailers, along with numerous samples of poster art. I was thrilled with what I saw, even without music and other elements that would be added. Months later, an early cut of the movie was brought to our home by producer Cindy Bond and Holly Caruso (the wife of director D.J. I still see it as miraculous that Redeeming Love was “in the can” just twenty-four hours before South Africa shut down, also that the cast and crew were all able to make it safely home. But before long, news hit of a new virus spreading quickly around the globe and everything changed. There was no hint of COVID and when we arrived home, there still wasn’t a whisper of a pandemic. When we left, we knew “the shoot” would soon be finished and we looked forward to readying for the theatrical release. The sets were beyond my dreams, the costumes fantastic, the setting absolutely gorgeous. It was so exciting to meet the actors, the director, the crew, and so many other people involved in making the feature film based on my novel. Last February, Rick and I traveled to South Africa to see the filming of Redeeming Love. Like thousands of other shuttered businesses across the country, the store Caine owns, called the Raven Book Store, was temporarily closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. On social media, he saw outrage and protests, but at home in Lawrence, Kansas, the streets were calm. On a warm Tuesday in May, Danny Caine's Twitter feed filled with a video of George Floyd's final breaths during an arrest by Minneapolis police officers. In this episode, JF and Phil discuss Wilson's concept of Faculty X as elaborated in his monumental 1971 work, The Occult. For Wilson, magic isn't the living fossil the arch-rationalists would like it to be, but a "science of the future." Faculty X is an evolutionary power, innately positive, inseparable from the will to live and the unshakeable conviction that, somehow, this world has some real, ineffable meaning. The Occult by Colin Wilson is an amazing compendium of occult practices and some of their bizzarre and eccentric adherents. At its simplest, what Colin Wilson calls Faculty X is "simply that latent power in human beings possess to reach beyond the present." Yet its existence is evinced in all those phenomena that modernity files under "supernatural" or "occult." As difficult to explain as it is impossible to omit from any honest survey of human existence, the occult haunts the modern, not just as a vestige of the past but also, perhaps, as a promise from a time to come. And a book of spells that could destroy the world. ** Over 1,000 5-star reviews on Goodreads! **Ī reclusive scholar. Five years after the Xerox 914 hit the mass market in 1960, "xeroxing" was part of pop culture and the company brought in $500 million in revenue.īut beyond Brooks' account, Xerox's leadership had grown comfortable with its early success. Gates wrote that one of the most instructive stories in the book, especially when taken in a historical context, is the article with his favorite title, "Xerox Xerox Xerox Xerox." Brooks chronicled how Xerox recruited researchers to develop the product that would replace the mimeograph machine and change how offices worked around the world. The Xerox 914, shown here in this September 1959 ad, was a revolutionary product. Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders.
